George Faraj provides an eye-witness account of the bomb attack on the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in 1946, then the headquarters of the British Mandate. The Irgun, a militant group led by Menachem Begin, the later Israeli prime minister, organised the attack to put pressure on the British to leave and to allow the establishment of a Jewish state. Although George survived the explosion, ninety-one people were killed, including his cousin, Issa Faraj.

George comes from a Christian family. He lived in Qatamoun, a West Jerusalem neighbourhood in which many Palestinian Christians lived. He fled to Lebanon where he worked for many years at the prestigious American University of Beirut. Today, he is retired.
