Hamdeh comes from a Bedouin family. She recalls memories of her childhood: stealing eggs to pay for tickets to the magic box show; her Jewish friend, the prettiest girl in the neighbourhood; and what kind of relations were permitted, or not permitted, between Muslims and Jews.

Today, Hamdeh lives in one of the unrecognised camps near Tyre. The residents are refugees who are not registered with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees and therefore have no right to the basic facilities provided by the UNWRA. She never married and is now almost blind. She survives on the charity of her neighbours and local institutions.
