Ismail Shammout recalls that hot July day in 1948, when 50,000 inhabitants of Lydda, his hometown, were driven together and forced to march to Jordan, never to return. Ismail is a well-known artist, famous for his paintings of the Nakba. After 1948 he lived for a while in Gaza, in Khan Yunis refugee camp. Later, he moved to Beirut and became an active member of the PLO. When Israel attacked the PLO during the Lebanese civil war he fled to Kuwait. In 1994, he had to leave again when the Kuwaiti government turned against the Palestinians for supporting the Iraqi invasion. He moved to Amman where he died, aged 76. His two sons live in Germany.
