Mahmud Abu Haija comes from Shaab, a village near Haifa. He describes the fighting in which he took part in 1948. He is bitter about the failure of the Salvation Army, the armies of the neighbouring Arab countries, to provide adequate military support. He blames them for surrendering Shaab and nearby Birweh, where he also fought, to the Israeli troops.
Mahmud continued to fight all his life. He still keeps his gun under his pillow. He lost his wife and three sons in various phases of the Lebanese civil war.
